This is the second in a recurring column on the Manchester Speculative Fiction website, where our writers reply to a short prompt, anything from ‘What are you writing?’ via. ‘What keeps you up at night?’ all the way to ‘Did Han shoot first?’.
This month we’re asking: Hey MSF! What are you reading?
Whether you’re looking for something to read right now or yet another book to add to your to-be-read pile, maybe we can give you some ideas to scratch that itch.
Heather is reading Beautyland by Marie-Helene Bertino

The main character is born with a knowledge of another planet and takes it upon herself to adopt the role of an Earth correspondent, reporting on the depth and breadth of human existence. I’m really looking forward to discussing it with my book club as I’ve heard it’s an uplifting read and very beautiful.
Graeme reported he’s re-reading Use of Weapons by Iain M. Banks

Use of Weapons is the third book in the Culture series of novels, and a re-read definitely sounds like it’s a thumbs up!
Maddy says she’s been reading Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

I’m reading Fourth Wing to try and study what about it has made it so popular. I’ve been dissecting it with a couple of writer friends.
Rob’s reading Persephone Station by Stina Leicht

I’m reading Persephone Station, because it has a good title and cool cover art!
Dara says next up on the list is Cat Dragon by Samantha Birch

It sounds charming and whimsical, and I hear Boo the cat is looking forward to reading it too!
Gary is just finishing Terry Pratchett’s Thief of Time and is planning to start Starve Acre by Andrew Michael Hurley next.
It was recommended at a meeting by one of the members a while ago and has the feel of a perfect story to be read as the weather cools and dark evenings creep closer.
Noah has just finished The Curse of Eelgrass Bog by Mary Averling
It is a middle grade book, but I think it’s written in a way that appeals to all ages. I’d describe as a cosy adventure book with some creepy imagery to add some flare. If you’re stuck for something to read, I’d recommend it as I think you would enjoy it as I did!
Finally, Bryn is reading Fathomfolk by Eliza Chan

Fathomfolk is the first in the Tideborn series of novels written by one of the group’s former members, and it’s on all our TBR lists!
Keep filling up those wells of inspiration by reading to write!
